Omnibus · § 11 PAngV · CJEU C-330/23

Strikewise calculates per

  • Omnibus DirectiveArt. 6a Dir. 98/6/EC
  • § 11 PAngVGermany
  • § 9a PrAGAustria
  • CJEU C-330/23Strike-through ruling 2024

The law

Since the CJEU ruling, the lowest price counts. For the strike-through price, too.

Anyone in the EU who announces a price reduction must state the lowest price of the 30 days before it. Since the Aldi Süd ruling of 26 September 2024, the strike-through price and the percentage must refer to exactly that lowest price.

  • Legal warnings

Competitors and associations can take action against wrong price reductions. Small shops are no exception.

  • Sham discounts

A price raised shortly before a sale does not count as the strike-through price. WooCommerce strikes it through anyway.

  • Wrong percentages

“−18 %” must be calculated from the lowest price of the 30 days, not from the last price charged.

Example: Down jacket Alpine
Example: Down jacket AlpinePrice history over six weeks. The price was 249 euros, was raised to 279 euros shortly before the sale and then reduced to 229 euros. How it works

Install, activate. From then on, Strikewise keeps track.

Set up correctly out of the box. There is nothing to configure, but you can adjust the text and placement.

  1. Record

Strikewise stores every price change: from the editor, imports, the REST API and scheduled sales. One row per change, no millions of rows in wp_postmeta.

  2. Calculate

When a reduction starts, Strikewise finds the lowest price of the 30 days before. Including VAT, for every variation, also for stepwise reductions.

  3. Show and prove

The notice appears on the product page and in lists, and the strike-through price is corrected. The price history is kept for 400 days as evidence.

The price history, right in the product

For every product you see which price applied when, which lowest price counts and what the shop shows.

  • Chart with the 30-day window before the reduction
  • A clear hint when a reduction is not allowed like this
  • Enter the earlier price when it is still missing

Overview

  • Lowest price notice

On product pages and in lists, with your own wording. Plus a block and the [strikewise] shortcode.

  • CJEU mode, on by default

The strike-through price becomes the lowest price. Sham discounts and products never offered for more are not shown as a sale.

  • Stepwise reductions

First −10 %, then −20 %: the reference stays the price before the first step (§ 11 para. 2 PAngV).

  • Missing earlier price

If a sale started before you installed Strikewise, simply enter the earlier price in the product.

  • Public coupon campaigns

A code for everyone counts as the lowest price for 30 days after the campaign.

  • Perishable goods

Reductions because of an approaching best-before date are exempt. The shop states the reason instead.

  • Price history with chart

Every change with time and source, kept for 400 days as evidence.

  • Switch from “Omnibus”

Imports the price history of the “Omnibus” plugin by iworks. The lowest price is right from day one.

  • Warnings

Strikewise tells you when a discount or multi-currency plugin sets prices it cannot see.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the free version really complete?

Yes. Everything the EU rules and the CJEU ruling require for your shop is free: lowest price notice, CJEU mode, stepwise reductions, coupon campaigns, perishable goods and price history. Premium adds convenience, such as the weekly report and the sale planner.

Does Strikewise protect me from legal action?

No plugin can promise that. Strikewise calculates the lowest price per Art. 6a of the Price Indication Directive and CJEU C-330/23 and records every price change as evidence. Price advertising outside your shop, such as newsletters or social media, is yours to check. Strikewise is not legal advice.

Which countries does it cover?

The rule comes from Art. 6a of the EU Price Indication Directive and applies in every EU country; in Germany it is § 11 PAngV, in Austria § 9a PrAG. Strikewise calculates per this common rule, and you can adjust the notice text. Some countries differ in details, for example in exemptions.

What about sales that started before I installed it?

Strikewise records prices from activation on. For older sales it does not know the earlier price yet: they are not shown as reductions until you enter the earlier price in the product or a new sale starts. If you switch from “Omnibus”, its price history is imported.

Which prices does Strikewise record?

Every price WooCommerce stores in the product: from the editor, imports, the REST API, WP-CLI and scheduled sales. Each variation has its own history, and calculations use final prices including VAT.

I use a discount or multi-currency plugin. Does that work?

Strikewise records the prices of your WooCommerce shop. Prices that a discount rule plugin only calculates on display, and fixed prices per currency, are currently not visible to it. When such a plugin is active, Strikewise warns you so you can check those prices yourself.

How does the Premium trial work?

Start the trial here or in the plugin. All Premium features are free for 14 days, no credit card. If you do not buy, the trial simply ends and the free features stay. Purchase and invoicing run through our partner Freemius, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Where is my price data stored?

In a dedicated table in your WordPress database. The price history is not sent to any third-party service. If you delete the plugin, it is kept by default because it can serve as evidence. You can change that in the settings.
